dirtybird

Starting out life as a small town girl in indiana, dirtybird managed to land her first djing gig in a banquet room of the local bowling alley in 1993. “A friend of mine hooked it all up with the owner, and we had an ancient looking board mixer with two cd players taken from someone’s house. We didn’t know what we were doing, but it was a great time. ” Dirtybird was playing tracks anywhere from New Order, Front 242, and Depeche Mode to the Goodmen, Latour, and the Nightcrawlers. Although the night was short lived, dirtybird was hooked on the idea of sharing music she loved and creating energy on the dancefloor.
After high school dirtybird moved to Chicago, and then on to Denver in the summer of 1996. There dirtybird spent most of her time going to clubs and surrounding herself with people who loved house music. After making the decision to head back to Chicago in 1999, she bought some decks and began beating the sounds of house and techno. She spent the next four years in the bedroom experimenting and developing her own sound, while working on some of her own production under the moniker plush. Two of her original tracks were featured by DJ Apocalypse on Q101’s legendary “Sonic Boom” radio show, a weekly showcase of the cities best djs which included Green Velvet, Lego, and Justin Long. In 2003, Dirtybird began playing house parties for luv-n-muzik and then went on to a monthly residency at the Joint’s “Flirt” night at lava lounge. Wanting to expose her sound to people everywhere, dirtybird also joined DJ Source Radio, a UK based internet radio station designed to feature unknown dj talent from all over the world. Known for keeping things deep and dirty, dirtybird’s ecletic mix of house, tech house, minimal house and techno made her a station favorite.

In 2004, dirtybird focused mainly on her own productions. Her tracks caught the ear of French darkwave group Trisomie21, who asked her to remix one of their tracks for their upcoming release “A Woman Is A Mix,” a compilation of Trisomie21’s original songs remixed by women from all genres of dance and electronic music. This compilation is due for a fall 2005 release and also features remixes from Misstress Barbara, K-Hand, Romina Cohn, DJ Manon, DJ Minx, and Miss Kittin. Dirtybird will also be collaberating with DJ Shiva (Internal Error, Azure, Beretta) in 2005.
On the decks you can expect Dirtybird to drop tracks that are funky, sexy, and downright filthy. Although she is not dedicated to any one genre, releases from Spectral, Lowdown, MFF, Aroma, Pesto, Classic, Soma, Trapez, Traum, and Kompakt seem to stay in her box. .” You never know where this bird will take you as the influential sounds of chicago, detroit, and berlin weave in and out of her sets. As a matter of fact, asking Dirtybird what she plays may leave you with no answer. “I play what I’m feeling. My mixes are over the place, but every track moves me deeply. All I want is to make the listener feel what I’m feeling, even if it envokes a different type of emotion than mine. I’m constantly learning and discovering new music that makes my insides thump, so my sets reflect that. I really just want to see people getting down…being in their own little world. Everyone needs to get a little dirty at some point, and I want to help create that space that a listener can go to when they need to feel a little rough, a little sassy, sexy, or whatever feeling gives them the most memorable time.”
