Not For Scholars

The Hartford based acoustic rock band Not For Scholars has been together only a short time but within that time, the group has accomplished much. After meeting at the University of Hartford in the fall of 2001, Tim Cohan and Shawn Murphy were playing open mics together around the Hartford, Connecticut area. Searching for a more dynamic sound, the duo invited friend and percussionist Tom Nelson to sit in and jam. After two weeks, the trio had a repertoire of songs from various artists and begun writing their own material. As a friend’s audio engineering project, the band recorded a cover of Dispatch’s “Steeples” and has used this song to show clubs and promoters what they can do on stage. This cover song is no longer a novelty as Not For Scholars has written and performed over half a dozen original songs and are in the process of writing more. Along with the writing and development of songs has come the refinement and development of Not For Scholars’ unique style; additions of violin and electric guitar have allowed NFS to attract and amaze their crowds. The group’s sound developed into a blend of modern rock structured around an acoustic sound. Not For Scholars is a regular at University of Hartford hot spots performing not only to a dedicated following but also to a fast-growing, diverse crowd. To add to their newly attributed credentials, Not For Scholars has played with Reel Big Fish, Mighty Purple, Hyperdrop and other local and regional acts. In the meantime, Not For Scholars has been in the studio recording their original songs. They will distribute this demo to fans and promoters as they spread their music to as many listeners as possible.
